Wow, it has been exciting the last few days here at thebyrdhaus! We have been hatching baby chicks. It is our first round of 36 eggs. One of the chicks hatched out a day earlier than the others and will probably get special treatment, as we have already begun to have a special attachment to her. Maybe her is a he, but for now, she will be known as a "her". Someday she will join our flock of hens, at least until she starts "crowing". I am so excited. I have already been online looking at chicken diapers and chicken aprons. Of course I am going to need a sling to carry her around.
Hatching was pretty difficult for our little chick. It took her over 18 hours from the time we first noticed a little peck in the side of the egg until she emerged. My daughter stated " Rebel chick won't be contained within the confines of a shell. "Screw this. I'm out," she says.". So she thinks she will call her "Rebel Chick". We have not decided on a name for her. She is a Black Australorp chick. She will lose her white feathers as she matures. We think she is beautiful. Black Australorp chickens are calm and friendly and are excellent layers. She will grow to be around 7 lbs. Mypetchicken describes Black Australorps , "They are calm and friendly, and excellent layers of light brown eggs. The Australorp's exceptionally soft, shiny black plumage has hints of green and purple in the sunlight. Peaceful and dignified, Australorps are an absolutely delightful bird which we highly recommend to anyone who wants a pet chicken that lays dependably."
We will spend plenty of time holding and petting her. She will definitely find lots of love here.
